I would like to thank all those for the advice on visiting the USAF museum at
Dayton. Had a difficult flight down there but stopped for two nights at
Dayton-Wright Brothers as per recommendations. Got one of the last few tie
downs and rental cars due to about 50 experimentals stranded there on the way
to OSH. The 'Aircraft Sales' FBO was the greatest. The older gal, 'Toots',
behind the counter was the kindest and most helpful in getting us all we needed
(car, hotel, etc.) as were all the line folks. My wife and I were thrilled with
the service.
The museum was awesome! The hint to go to the presidential hangers early was
the best advice. As only one bus goes at a time it was much uncrowded and a
pleasure to go through the past Air Force Ones (you can't, however, be
claustrophobic). The Valkyri blew me away. It's enormous! The regular exhibit
had so many aircraft I can't begin to remember what I saw. The unfinished
hanger was great because it was open but had no barricades yet so I could get
"up close and personal" with the planes (although I hear they are now roped
off). And it's all free!
Gorgeous flight to OSH and that's where it ended. The weather and crushing
crowd ruined the rest of our vacation (except the wonderful people at the
Goshen Indiana FBO which again helped us with a hotel and rental car). While
fighting our way east we did meet some other nice OSH refugees.
